Education
The Education Team teaches at three schools in St. Mary’s County. The team provides outreach and information to the local community, while encouraging students to increase awareness and develop a sense of stewardship to the St. Mary’s River.
St. Mary’s educators develop weekly lesson plans and activities to present to the fifth graders.
Some topics include:
- SAVs
- Food webs
- Pollution
- Wetlands
- Oysters and their significance to the Bay
A highlight to the program is Outreach Day, an all day Saturday event sponsored by the project each semester inviting the fifth graders to the college. Students participate in a beach seine to explore fish common in the shallow waters, a marsh walk to identify plant and marine species, a demonstration on monitoring the river for water quality.
Schools:
- Greenview Knolls
- George Washington Carver
