On Wednesday, October 7th, St. Mary’s alumnus Shane Hall (Class of 2009), offered a presentation of his doctoral research at the University of Oregon, “War By Other Means: Environmental Violence in the 21st Century.” Examining cultural texts such as The Walking Dead, Cloud Atlas, and The Hunger Games on screen and in print, Hall is exploring how analyzing cycles of slow violence and environmental injustice in cultural and environmental discourse reveal opportunities for making interventions in real world scenarios. Shane’s focus on the intersectionality of social and environmental degradation is a great example of the interdisciplinary skills and insights of St. Mary’s alumnae.
