A biological volunteer internship position will be offered at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge (CLNWR) in Key Largo, FL.  This position will work on various land management and research projects within the unique ecosystems of the Upper Florida Keys. Duties consist of tasks common to natural resource management including: wildlife surveys, habitat restoration, inventorying and monitoring of endangered species; and assisting in other wildlife management activities as assigned. This position requires strenuous physical activity that includes exotic plant eradication, small mammal trapping, planting native plants, and conducting field work independently or as a part of a group to support biological programs. In addition to field work, up to 30% of the position’s time may include data entry including use of Access, Excel, and ArcGIS.

Field work will be conducted in many types of habitats including mangrove, tropical hardwood hammock, and disturbed sites.   CLNWR is an ideal site for those looking to start a career in natural resource management or endangered species research because of the many complex conservation challenges.

A number of endangered and threatened species are encountered in CLNWR, such as the American Crocodile, Key Largo Woodrat, Keys Tree Cactus and Key Largo Cotton Mouse. Because of the many endangered species, a number of ongoing research projects are underway to answer important management questions.
