Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning. The CLS Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State.

Boren Awards

Boren Scholarships (for undergraduates): Apply for fully funded language-learning opportunities, in exchange for a promise that you will work in US public service for a year. You must be enrolled as a student during the time of the program. Deadline: January 29 and February 5th.

Fulbright Scholar Program

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers over 500 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars and many others. In addition to several new program models designed to meet the changing needs of U.S. academics and professionals, Fulbright is offering more opportunities for flexible, multi-country grants.

Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship awards in the world. Each year 32 young students from the United States are selected as Rhodes Scholars, through a decentralized process representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. Applicants from more than 320 American colleges and universities have been selected as Rhodes Scholars. In most years, even after a century of competition, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution which has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.

TAPIF

The Teaching Assistantship Program in France is a competitive opportunity funded by the French Ministry of Education for graduates to teach English language and culture in France or French territories for an academic year. Requirements include having a certain level of proficiency and interest in French language and culture, and having a B.A. degree. SMCM has quite a few TAPIF alumni (including a TAPIF alumna Director of IE), so please reach out to the OIE and French department for more information! Deadlines are in January each year.
