Assistant Professor of Marine Science
St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM) is accepting applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Marine Science beginning August 2026. Candidates who are interested in nurturing a newly established undergraduate program are encouraged to apply. Teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Marine Science, Marine Science Senior Capstone, either Biological or Physical Oceanography, and marine science elective courses in your area of expertise. We especially seek candidates with strong quantitative skills whose elective courses would also support SMCM's Data Science program. In addition to teaching, faculty at SMCM are expected to develop an active, undergraduate-focused research program. An interest in and ability to offer hands-on student research opportunities and learning experiences that take advantage of our waterfront location on the Chesapeake Bay and our expanding marine science infrastructure, including a 46-foot research vessel, several center console boats, a wet-lab with flow-through river water, a newly renovated teaching lab, and an array of shared scientific instrumentation will also be an advantage.
Qualifications: By start of contract, candidates must have completed a PhD in Marine Science, Oceanography, or related scientific field. We value course-based research opportunities and other high impact practices you can bring to SMCM. Successful candidates will have knowledge of ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in marine science and ideas about how best to cultivate a just and inclusive learning and working environment. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check. The salary range is $74,000-$80,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
