Secondary School Teachers

4+1 Degree Prerequisites (Secondary/K-12 Courses)

The following courses must be taken before the beginning of the program, and are available at SMCM every semester.

If you are a transfer student, check transfer acceptability with the Registrar’s Office. All of these courses must have been completed with a C or higher. Those applying with a AA or AAT degree will need to complete at least a year of foreign language- please contact the Director of Teacher Education for more information on this point.

Secondary Candidates (Grades 7-12 = EDSC)

  • Major in the appropriate content field with appropriate breadth/depth
  • Introduction to Psychology – PSYC 101
  • Child in America – EDUC 206
  • Language Acquisition and Phonemic Awareness – EDUC 296
  • Exceptionality – EDUC 336
  • Educational Psychology – EDUC/PSYC 368
  • Adolescence – PSYC 333
  • ESL Across the Curriculum – EDUC 394 or EDUC 491 (3cr)
  • Course work reflecting non-western perspectives (often taken routinely as part of the major)

K-12 Candidates (Grades Pre-K-12 in Art, Music, Theater =  EDUC)

  • Major in the appropriate content field with appropriate breadth/depth
  • Introduction to Psychology – PSYC 101
  • Child in America – EDUC 206
  • Language Acquisition and Phonemic Awareness – EDUC 296
  • Exceptionality – EDUC/PSYC 336
  • Educational Psychology – EDUC/PSYC 368
  • Infant and Child Development – PSYC 230 Lifespan and Development
  • ESL Across the Curriculum – EDUC 394 or EDUC 491 (4cr)
  • Course work reflecting non-western perspectives (often taken routinely as part of the major)
  • Music majors should complete any four one-credit methods courses in strings, brass, percussion, etc.
  • Program Courses Typically Offered by SMCM in the Traditional Summer School Session
  • Child in America – EDUC 206
  • Exceptionality – EDUC/PSYC 336
  • Educational Psychology – EDUC/PSYC 368
  • ESL Across the Curriculum – EDUC 394 or EDUC 491 (4cr)

 

3+1 Degree Prerequisites (Secondary/K-12 Courses)

  • Art History OR any Studio Art OR English Literature and Composition;
  • Biology OR Environmental Science OR any physics exam;
  • either Calculus exam OR Computer Science A;
  • Macroeconomics AND Microeconomics;
  • Any Foreign Language exam;
  • Any Government exam
  • Any History exam
  • Psychology
  • Exams which will fulfill requirements for your major (For instance, either calculus exam for prospective math teachers; Western Civilization for prospective history teachers)

OR at least 12 credits of community college from among the following:

  • Introduction to Psychology,
  • Infant and Child Development or Lifespan Development,
  • any Foreign Language,
  • any course with a non-US, non-European focus,
  • courses in the area you intend to teach, which will fulfill requirements for your major

2+1 Degree Prerequisites (Secondary/K-12 Courses)

Prospective Middle & High school teachers
At least 40 credits distributed among the following:

  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Foreign Language proficiency
  • Lifespan Development or Adolescent Development;
  • Educational Psychology
  • Foundations of American Education or equivalent
  • Language Acquisition & Reading Development for Secondary/K-12 Teachers

Prospective Art, Music, & Theater teachers:
At least 40 credits distributed among the following:

  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Foreign Language proficiency
  • Infant & Child, Lifespan, or Adolescent Development;
  • Educational Psychology
  • Foundations of American Education or equivalent
  • Language Acquisition & Reading Development for Secondary/K-12 Teachers
