The goal of the psychology major is to enhance your understanding of behavior and mental processes and to examine their connection to other disciplines.
You have the option of studying 6 areas within the field of psychology:
- Biological psychology
- Clinical psychology
- Cognitive psychology
- Counseling psychology
- Developmental psychology
- Social psychology
Specific objectives concern the understanding of:
- The diverse theories and content of psychology
- Critical thinking and analysis
- Scientific methodology and its application
- Evaluating research designs
- Formulating testable research hypothesis
- Selecting statistical tests & interpreting output
The Psychology major consists of five components:

- A required core of courses which introduce you to the field and to necessary communication skills within the field, including required methodology courses in writing, library research, statistics, and experimental design
- A required core of lower-division courses which provide you with exposure to the key sub-disciplines of psychology
- Two upper-division laboratory courses, chosen from a set of seven which represent psychology’s close alliance with both the social sciences and the natural-sciences approaches to the study of behavior
- An upper-division course chosen from a group of elective offerings
- A senior capstone project
Please note that there is no Psychology Minor at this time.
